If you’ve ever seen a picture of the Statue of Liberty, you have probably noticed that Lady Liberty has two things in her hands—the torch and a book. Supposedly, the book symbolizes knowledge and the torch symbolizes enlightenment. Knowledge and enlightenment are represented because they both are essentials of freedom.
The Book of Galatians is for us who are saved like the Statue of Liberty in that it stands out as the beacon of the freedom that we have in Jesus Christ. You could even call today’s text our “Statute of Liberty.” And like the Statue of Liberty, our “Statute of Liberty” holds knowledge and enlightenment essential to our freedom. Not the humanistic knowledge or enlightenment symbolized by the book and torch held by Lady Liberty, but the knowledge contained in the truth of the Gospel enlightened by the Holy Spirit. And when we receive this knowledge enlightened by the Spirit of God, “we shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free!”
