According to a recent poll, 88% of Roman Catholics and over 60% of Presbyterians and Methodists believe that if a person is generally good and does enough good things for others during his life, he will earn a place in heaven. Such an opinion is not biblical. In fact, you could call it a different gospel from that of Scripture.
As Paul will teach us in the book of Galatians, there is only one gospel that can deliver us from the black hole of this present evil age in which we live, and that is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s the true Gospel which states that salvation is a gift of God through faith and not of our own works. As Paul says in Galatians 5:4, all who attempt to follow a different gospel by which they are justified by their good deeds, have become estranged from Christ, and have fallen from grace.
