As we will be reminded in today’s lesson, there is no statute of limitations for sins committed against God. Matthew Henery in his Bible commentary on 2 Samuel stated in Latin, “Nullum tempus occurit Deo,” which means, “No time limits on God”-“God may punish whenever He pleases!” In today’s text we will see the Lord punishing Israel with a famine for sins Saul committed against the Gibeonites decades earlier.
The Lord is slow to anger and full of mercy, but He is a just God, and at some point He will punish every sin–that is, every sin not covered under the blood of Jesus Christ. This Thanksgiving Season one thing for sure we have to be thankful for is that in Christ our hope for salvation is not in the expiration of time, for God has no statute of limitations. No, our hope is in the pardon we hold in our hands that we received when we looked upon the cross of Jesus Christ!
