1 Thessalonians 5:19-28 – Putting Out The Spirit’s Fire

1 Thessalonians 5:19-28 – Putting Out The Spirit’s Fire

We often pray for revival but it doesn’t ever seem to come. Charles Finney, the great revivalist of the 19th Century, believed that the main barrier to revival was the quenching of the Spirit within the church. How do we quench the Spirit? Finney suggested the following list of ways: 1) By the lack of faith 2) By resisting truth 3) By violating conscience 4) By overindulging our appetites 5) By a bad temperament 6) By gossiping and showing prejudice.

In today’s study, we will examine just what it means to quench the Spirit, the ways we do it, and the consequences of putting out the Spirit’s fire. If we want to see revival in our own lives and also to have the power to bring about revival in the lives of others, we need to play close heed to what we will learn from the Word today.
