1 Samuel 30 – A New Year’s Resolution for the Ages

Someone once quipped, “A New Year’s resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other!” But for Christians there are certainly some New Year’s resolutions worth making. One of them can be gleaned from our text today in 1 Samuel where we are told that David “strengthened himself in the LORD.” Can you think of a better New Year’s resolution for 2014 than that? We resolve that no matter how bad things might look in 2014, we will strengthen ourselves in the LORD. As Francis Havergai wrote in one of her poems about the New Year,

Another year is dawning!
Dear Master let it be
In working or in waiting
Another year with Thee
Another year in leaning
Upon Thy loving breast
Of ever-deepening trustfulness
Of quiet and happy rest!

May all of us find strength in the Lord in 2014,
George
