Hebrews 4:11-16 – Resting in the Old, Old Story

Karl Barth had this to say about “the old, old story” of Easter: “The Easter story tells us that our enemies, sin, the curse, and death, are beaten. Ultimately, they can no longer start mischief. But they still behave as though the game was not decided, the battle not fought. We must still reckon with them, but fundamentally we must cease to fear them anymore.” (Barth, Dogmatics in Outline)

The author of Hebrews is teaching us something similar, to live as if the battle has been fought and the game has been decided; because it has. That’s the message of “the old, old story” of Easter which tells us we can find rest and peace in Christ’s total victory and finished work at Calvary!
