A recent Gallup poll showed that over 78% of Americans drive over the speed limit at one time or the other during the week. Most speeders try to drive somewhere between 3-5 miles over the speed limit. That way they can break the law and at the same time not get a ticket. (I’m guilty!) Why this propensity to break the speed limit? Some would simply answer, “We speed so we can get to our destination sooner.”Let me suggest to you that there is another reason we are prone to speed. It is part of our nature. We are “stiff-necked” people. We don’t like being told how fast we can drive and so we rebel and go as fast as we think we can and get away with it.
As we will learn in today’s lesson, the Jews were a “stiffed-necked” people. They did not like being told where to go, what to do, or when to do it. They pretended to be the people of God, but their history was replete with their rebellion against God. What about you and I, are we pretending to be the sons and daughters of God, but in reality we too are a “stiff necked” people-going where we want to go, doing what we want to do, when we want to do it, all the while ignoring the will of God?
