1 Samuel 20 – Forsaking Your Calling

1 Samuel 20 – Forsaking Your Calling

David was called to be the king of Israel. And because his calling came from God, nothing could stand in the way of him eventually sitting on the throne of Israel. Even though it will seem in today’s text that David has forsaken his calling, that he has concluded that he was never meant to be king, God’s plans for David haven’t changed, and David will still someday be the king of Israel!

Journalist Ashley Ambrose chose early in life to be a poet. But he reached a point in his life in his early twenties when he realized that being a poet was not his calling. He wrote, “I concluded one day that I was not a poet. It was the bitterest day of my life!” Many people live a good portion of their lives pursuing some personal dream or goal only to find out later in life it was something they had never been called to do. That’s why it is so essential for all of us to find our calling from God. When God calls us, He calls us to a life of eternal significance, and we know from His Word that “His callings and elections are for sure!”
