1 Corinthians 11:2-16 – Traditions

The following hand-lettered signs were scattered throughout a particular drive-in fast-food place in Southern California:
DO NOT BACK IN
RESTROOMS ARE FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY
(On the trash cans) NOT FOR DIAPER DISPOSAL OR AUTO TRASH
LOCAL CHECKS FOR AMOUNT OF PURCHASE ONLY
VANILLA FROSTIES ONLY DIPPED IN ONE SIZE ONLY
PLEASE ORDER BY NUMBER
OBSERVE ALL SIGNS (Fresh Illustrations,Rowell, p. 132).
Those signs not only illustrate how absurd legalism can become, they also demonstrate the impossibility of applying traditional precepts to everyone universally. What might work for a drive-in diner certainly wouldn’t work for an upscale, sit-down restaurant.
Today Paul is going to advance certain traditional precepts that he recommends be used in the Corinthian culture. But as we will learn today, these traditions might not be right for every church in every place and every age.
May God bless our study today in 1 Corinthians,
George
