Samuel 17:1-23 – This Lord of Hosts Is the God of Jacob

The great English preacher John Daniel had this to say about the sovereignty of God, “It’s a comforting thing to know and believe in the sovereignty of God over His creation; to know that the destiny of this world is not in the hands of kings and armies. To believe in the sovereignty of the LORD is to be delivered from fear and despair.” The Psalmist encourages us with this good news in Psalms 97:1: “The LORD reigns; let the distant shores rejoice.”

In today’s lesson in 2 Samuel, we will be reminded that God is not only sovereign over the affairs of kings and armies and nations, He is sovereign over the affairs of individuals too, because “The LORD of Hosts is the God of Jacob.” Why can “the distant shores rejoice?” Because a good God, who has nothing but good intentions for our lives, has sovereign control over everyone and everything!
