Someone once described the crucifixion event by saying, “Jesus came to pay a debt He didn’t owe because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay.” That witty statement certainly tells the truth that Jesus had to pay our debt in order to save us, but it falls short in its theological efficacy in that it doesn’t tell us how or why he paid our debt. Well, we all know how He paid our debt. He died on the cross for our sins. Why did He come to pay our debt? Because He had to? NO! He came to pay our debt because He loves us.
As we will see in our study today, Jesus was romancing us through the cross. He was making a way for us to live with Him as His loving bride forever! May a day not go by that we don’t look to the cross and be reminded of His everlasting love for each and every one of us!!
