Hebrews 12:25-29 – A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On

Way back in 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis had a hit song entitled, “A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On.” Jerry Lee was referring to something else, but even so, the title serves as an apt description of the metaphor of an earthquake, which will be the main theme of our text today. Earthquakes are pretty commonplace events in the Bible, and they usually mark the appearance of God or some major event. There was an earthquake on Sinai when God appeared to give Israel the law. There was an earthquake on Golgatha when Jesus died on the cross. The Prophets and John in the Book of Revelation tell about a coming earthquake of God’s judgment that will shake both heaven and earth.
The author of Hebrews will give us his fifth and final warning today as he tells us that we can expect a “whole lotta shakin’” in our own personal lives as well. Why does God shake us by sending us our own personal earthquakes? As the author will tell us, He shakes us, so that the bad things in our lives can be separated from the good things that remain.
