Hebrews 12:1-11 – Arm Chair Quarterback

Hebrews 12:1-11 – Arm Chair Quarterback

In today’s lesson, the author of Hebrews will liken the Christian walk of faith to participation in a sport- specifically a marathon. One of the big problems in Christendom today is that too many so-called Christians never really get into the race; they just sit on the sidelines and criticize those who are. You could call them arm chair quarterbacks. One dictionary defines an arm chair quarterback as a person who is not playing the game, nor often never has, who offers opinions and criticisms on the performance and decisions of those who are in the game.

In today’s lesson, we will be exhorted by the author of Hebrews to get out of the arm chair and into the race as we follow the example of the “cloud of witnesses” that have gone on before us. And we are not called to direct the race we run or anyone else’s for that matter; that job is in the hands of the author and finisher of our faith-none other than Jesus Christ Himself!
