In 1846, the Illinois Legislature used an obscure statue to send Stephen A Doug-las to the U.S. Senate, even though Abraham Lincoln had won the popular vote. When a friend asked Lincoln how he felt, he said, “Like the boy who stubbed his toe: too big to cry and too badly hurt to laugh.”
In today’s text, the Israelites are going to cry out, “Give us a king!” and the great prophet Samuel is going to feel the sting of rejection. But as we will learn in our study, it is not Samuel who the people are rejecting as their ruler, but God Al-mighty Himself. How sad!
