David Hume once speculated on God’s sovereignty over evil by asking, “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then He is impotent. Is He able, but not willing? Then He is malevolent . If He able and willing to stop evil, whence then is evil?” In other words, we know that God is not impotent and he is not malevolent, so why is there evil in our world? Why does God allow Satan and his demons to reap such havoc not just on unbelievers, but believers as well?
As we finish up chapter 16 of I Samuel and look at this mysterious verse 14, where the author says that “an evil spirit from the Lord troubled Saul,” we will explore God’s role in allowing and using evil for His purposes. Hopefully, we will also learn some ways to chase those troubling spirits right out of our lives!
