The great preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick once noted, “Some people have just enough religion to make themselves miserable.” I think you could also add to that statement that some people have so much religion they make themselves and others miserable. That was the case with Saul. After he was coronated as king he became a very religious man. But as we will see in our lesson today, his religion was empty, legalistic, and self-centered. As he exercised his religion, he didn’t bring people joy, he brought them misery!
May God help prevent us from every supplanting living faith in Jesus Christ with dead religion!
