James Hewett once wisely noted, “The secret of patience is doing something else in the meanwhile.” In other words, the secret of patience is doing something constructive while we wait.
In our lesson today, Saul was told to wait seven days for the arrival of Samuel who would make a burnt offering for the people of Israel before they went to war with the Philistines. But as his troops became impatient and began to desert, Saul illegally took matters into his own hands and made the offering himself. It was a bad move that would cost him his kingdom. Perhaps his failure could have been averted if he had kept himself busy seeking the Lord in prayer while he waited.
May we learn to occupy our time wisely while we wait upon the Lord,
