A slave in Roman times could be redeemed by the payment of a large sum of silver and gold. But the redemption that Jesus paid to set us free from our sin came at an infinitely greater price. Peter will tell us in today’s text that “we were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver or gold, but by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, as of a lamb without blemish or spot.” Another way of putting it would be that God went “all in” when He paid the price for our redemption. He gave His only begotten Son!
What should our response be to such a grand sacrifice? We should go “all in.” How do we go “all in?” As Peter will tell us today, “we should be holy as He is holy.” That’s quite a challenge, going “all in,” but don’t you think He deserves our best effort, seeing that He went “all in” for us?
