I read a story years back about two young boys who were fishing near some steep falls on a river in California. There were several highly visible warning signs posted on the river, but they were so focused on their fishing that they begin to drift towards the falls. Soon the currents became too strong for them to control their boat and the river carried them over the falls to their death below.
The Bible is full of warning signs about drifting away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Today we will be looking at the first of five severe warnings in the book of Hebrews. All five of the warnings in the book are given to alert the reader of the danger of drifting into “works righteousness,” instead of resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Those who fail to heed the warning signs do so at their own peril, “for by the works of the law, no flesh shall be justified,” and those who aren’t justified face eternal damnation.
