One of the lines in John Newton’s great hymn Amazing Grace, goes like this: T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear and Grace my fears relieved!” Newton was so right when he penned those words, because it is by God’s grace that we come to a point where we realize that His standard for those who will enter His heaven is perfection, and we don’t meet that standard, so it causes us to fear. But then grace relieves our fears because Christ Himself gives us the power to move towards perfection. And as John will show us in today’s text, the best way to measure God’s perfection of our lives is by our love for others. That should scare us all, because none of us love others as we should. But as we will learn today, if we are truly born again, God will give us grace upon grace to love others with His perfect love as we are changed from glory to glory.
