I read a story awhile back about a student who was not allowed to graduate from a conservative Christian college because he was caught with his arm around his finance shortly before the ceremony. Public expression of love was forbidden at that college, even if the person was expressing it to his wife or fiancé, because the founders of the college believed that such acts were “worldly,” and thus were forbidden in the Bible. And John will warn us in today’s text “to not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” But do things like expressing love in public amount to worldliness? Well, we will find out today as we examine this text in detail and learn what John really meant by his admonition.
