Revelation 1:5-8 – What’s in a Name

Revelation 1:5-8 – What’s in a Name

If you were to ask a member of the Kabalarian cult, “What’s in a name?” He would tell you, ”Everything!” Because the Kabalarians believe that the name you are given determines the meaning and destiny of your life. And they would say that if your name isn’t working for you, get a new one.

I don’t agree that for most people their future is determined by their names, but in the Bible, names do often tell us something about a biblical character’s life. For example, Jacob’s name means “heel-catcher” and “deceiver”, and for much of his life his actions certainly fit that billing.  But no other name is more important or fits the meaning and destiny of His life than the name Jesus. His name means “Jehovah is salvation”, and His name very vividly describes maybe the most important purpose of His life in His relationship with mankind. We will see just how important His name is in our study today in Revelation.
